GUIDE / COLORIZE

How to colorize black-and-white manga with AI

You have a stack of black-and-white pages and want readers to see them in full color. Colorize in CromStudio lets you upload your own black-and-white pages, color them with AI, and publish them straight to the crom manga app as the pages of an episode. This guide walks through how to tell which pages color well and which do not, how to keep colors consistent, and how to fix the parts that break.

First-time CromStudio users receive 1,000 coins. They can only be spent on generation inside Studio and expire 90 days after they are granted.

Pages you can colorize

Colorize is for black-and-white pages you hold the rights to yourself. You can send PNG, JPG or WebP images of up to 20MB each, up to 10 at a time. Manga drawn by other people and scans of commercially published manga are not eligible.

The AI infers colors from the linework and shading. Because of this, pages with many small, densely drawn panels or complex compositions may not be colored faithfully to the original art. Pages with adult elements may also be impossible to colorize under the AI model's terms. Coins for pages stopped by the safety check are refunded.

Link your pages to a work and episode

On the Colorize screen, you can link the images you upload to a work and an episode. If you do, the colored version you adopt is imported automatically as a page of that episode, so you do not have to reorder anything when you publish later.

When you create a new episode and choose the "Colorize and translate finished artwork" workflow, you can go from the episode screen to the Colorize screen with "Upload artwork and colorize". If you have not registered the work yet, create it first.

Pass "Color reference images" to keep colors consistent

The AI colors each page separately, so without any guidance the same character's hair or clothes may change color from page to page. Color reference images prevent this. Pass up to three color pictures that show hair, eye and outfit colors, and they are shared across every page you send in that run.

If you have color character sheets or a color cover illustration, using them as references is the most reliable choice. If the cast is large, pick a picture where the main characters appear together.

Recolor pages you do not like with extra instructions

Each colorize run is kept in the history as a version. For pages you do not like, use "Retry" to recolor them by adding instructions, changing the reference images or switching the AI model. Each retry uses coins. Recoloring does not delete earlier versions, so you can go back at any time with "Use this version" in the history.

You can choose from several AI models. Each model colors with its own tendencies, so the least wasteful approach is to try one page to find the model that suits the mood of your work, then color the remaining pages together.

Restore broken speech bubble text from the original (free)

The part most likely to break in colorization is the text inside speech bubbles. The AI redraws the lettering as part of the picture, so lines blur or letters change shape.

When this happens, use "Merge from original (text repair)". It cuts out the area you specify from the black-and-white original and pastes it back at the same position on the colored version. It does not use AI and costs no coins. You can specify up to 10 areas per page, and if the art has shifted slightly during colorization, you can align the area to import on the original.

To redo something other than text, such as recoloring just one part, use "AI partial repaint". Write the area and what to fix, and the AI redraws only that part. This uses coins.

Publish the colored version

The colored version you adopt is imported as a page of the episode and can be published to the crom manga app in the same way as any other episode. Episodes that include colorized pages are reviewed by the team before going live. Once they pass review, they are published.

You can also download the colored images. If you are not on a monthly plan, downloaded images include a watermark.

Steps to colorize

  1. 1

Prepare a work and an episode

Create a work and the episode that will carry the colored version. If you choose the "Colorize and translate finished artwork" workflow for the episode, you can go to Colorize from the episode screen.

  2. 2

    Try a single page

On the Colorize screen, choose the work and episode, upload one representative page and your color reference images, choose an AI model and run it.

  3. 3

    Check the colors and text

Check the hair and outfit colors and the text in the speech bubbles. If the colors are off, change the instructions or references and recolor, then settle on a model.

  4. 4

    Color the remaining pages together

Using the model and reference images you settled on, send the remaining pages, up to 10 at a time.

  5. 5

    Fix what broke

For pages with broken text, restore it from the original with "Merge from original (text repair)". To fix only part of the colors, use "AI partial repaint".

  6. 6

    Adopt and publish

Adopt the version to use for each page and publish the episode. Episodes that include colorization go live after review by the team.

Frequently asked questions

Can AI color black-and-white manga I drew myself?

Yes. Upload your own black-and-white pages (PNG, JPG or WebP, up to 20MB each) on CromStudio's Colorize screen and the AI colors them. You can send up to 10 at a time.

Can I colorize commercially published manga?

No. You can only colorize pages you hold the rights to yourself.

The character's hair color changes from page to page.

Pass color reference images. Attach up to three color pictures that show hair and outfit colors, and they are shared across every page in that run.

The text in the speech bubbles blurred and became unreadable.

With "Merge from original (text repair)", you can paste the text areas of the black-and-white original back onto the colored version. It does not use AI, so it costs no coins.

Does colorization cost coins?

Yes. Each page uses coins depending on the AI model you choose. The coins needed are shown on screen before you run it, and coins for pages that fail are refunded. Text repair merges, switching versions in the history and publishing are free.
